German composer and conductor. Prominent early romantic composer, inclined to expressive, pleasing melodics and opulent, coloristic orchestral sound.
The  most outstanding works were written in the field of opera; Der Freischütz (The Marksman) is considered the first true German national opera.
For Heinrich Bärmann,  a clarinet player, he composed Concertos in F minor and E flat major and Concertino in E flat major, considered even today as standard pieces in clarinet literature.

He also composed Introduction, Theme and VariationsGrand Duo Concertant for Clarinet and Piano, Variations on a Theme for Clarinet & Piano, Clarinet Quintet in B flat major.
In orchestral compositions (operatic overtures), he often gives the clarinet a prominent role.
